My lantern relates to the theme of beyond due to the fact that I created my lantern to look like outer space. I did this by using black paper for the sides and creating stars out of yellow tissue paper. Creating a lantern design was a lot more difficult than I had thought. This is because I did not have a template or instructions and I had to figure out how to do everything on my own. After creating some designs and a prototype, it was much easier since I already knew what I was doing. I think my biggest challenge was that I didn’t know what to use on the edges to hold it all together. After trying multiple different options, I decided to just not use anything and that worked a lot better. This taught me that sometimes people overthink simple things. In the end, my lantern turned out pretty nice and I’m proud of what I created. My only advice would be to create very detailed instructions before actually creating the lantern so that you actually have some idea of what you’re doing.
For our first project we created pictures of euphemisms to hang on the walls around the school. Artist Statement: My art piece represents what we as a society find amusing today. I used what I would consider an extremely well known image and combined it with the common euphemism, Hitting the Hay. For extra effect, I added an element, a teddy bear, to help people better understand the deep meaning behind my work. The reaction that I would like my piece to get would be either a “same” or a “me”, because that’s what passes as communication today. Below is the rough draft and my completed work. |
