Hamartia is a topic that has floated around for centuries this term is used to represent a tragic hero(a hero that contains a flaw that ultimately leads to their downfall), many might ask if we as humankind possess a common “hamartia” that may lead to our downfall as a species. My partner and I happened to think that we did possess tragic flaws, so to start off our research we looked into determination and how it might be bad. A modern day example of determination is seen in the X-Men movies. One of the characters, Magneto, was separated from his parents in Auschwitz and discovered he could bend metal as he pleased while encountering guards. This paved a path for him to create a group of mutants that’s goal would be to one day rise above the humans so they wouldn’t harm mutants.
Gru, from Despicable Me, is a good example of some redeeming qualities that may make up for our flaws. He is a super villain who does horrible things and really enjoys doing them. He was determined to be the baddest of the bad and he went to drastic measures to achieve his goal, even though he was injured several times in the process. Now although Gru may seem like a pretty bad person, but he has a kind heart. About a quarter into the movie, he adopts three young girls from an orphanage as part of an evil plan to break into the new villain's fortress. At first, he treats them badly and uses them for his own intent, but after a while, he comes to really care for them and they become the most important thing to him. Because Gru had a change of heart, he was now determined to keep them safe and happy no matter what. At the end of the movie, he decides that he does not want to be bad anymore and the movie ended with a happy dancing scene. By the end of the movie, Gru has gone from being an evil super villain, to being a kind, caring, loving father figure. I think that this really shows how people can change. But not all changes are good. You see, the things is, everyone has good and bad inside of them. No one is all good or all bad. There can't be good without bad you can't have shadows without light.
